Why Beginners Struggle to Recruit Online, and What to Do First

October 15, 2026•9 min read

If you've just joined a network marketing company and you're wondering, "How do I build this using the internet?", you're asking a good question. Here's the short answer. Start with the recruiting process your team already uses, pick ONE online platform, share posts that make the right people curious, and follow up with everyone who shows interest. You don't need to write a book or build a funnel before you begin.

I came into network marketing from the online marketing world. I took the time to understand how this industry works and be part of it, and it felt like a totally different world. Network marketers are looking for partners to grow a business with, which is a very different thing from selling a product to a customer.

Once I understood that, I was able to bring my internet marketing experience into it and use the internet to recruit. In this article, I want to show you how to begin that journey in a way that suits someone who is just starting out.

How should you use the internet for your MLM business?

Use the internet to reach people beyond the circle you already know, and to give them a reason to notice you before you ever mention the business. Your company has already given you the products and the presentation. What the internet adds is reach. From home, you can talk to people in another city, or even another country.

There's one thing I learned early, though. When I first moved into network marketing, my advice to my downlines was simple: "do more". More posts, more messages. Their results stayed flat.

Then it dawned on me. People had already tuned them out, so all that activity was going into a void.

It's important to know there's a SYSTEM to using Facebook for network marketing, and the same concepts work on other platforms too. If recruiting online were only about posting stuff, everyone would be doing well at it by now.

Why do beginners struggle to recruit online?

Beginners usually struggle because they're handed too much to learn at once, long before their first real recruiting conversation. It's a lesson I took away from one of my own workshops.

I was teaching network marketers how to use the internet to attract prospects. The content was good, yet very few people were taking action, and that bothered me.

As I thought about it, I saw the problem. Some of my methods required someone who had just joined to learn too many other things first. Take writing a book as an example. A new distributor would need to write it, then build a funnel (the pages and follow-up messages that guide an interested reader towards a conversation), then learn how to promote the book. All of this while they were still learning the products and how to explain the opportunity. That's a lot of work before their first few proper recruiting conversations.

Something similar happened years ago, when I taught my team how to create information products. Only a few ever completed one, because the writing felt overwhelming.

Here's how I see it now.

Beginners need to learn how to use a system. Leaders need to learn how to build systems.

A strategy can be good for the business and still be the wrong one for where you are today.

How do you recruit online as a complete beginner?

As a complete beginner, your job is to use the recruiting process your team already has and practise one way of starting conversations online. Here's the order I suggest.

  1. Ask your sponsor to walk you through the full journey, from first contact until someone joins. Which resource do you share when a person is interested? Who handles the presentation? Watch it yourself, click every link, then write the steps on one page. When someone replies to you, you'll know exactly what comes next.

  2. Choose ONE platform you already know how to use, and stay with it for at least 90 days. If you want to reach working professionals, LinkedIn may suit you. For parents, Facebook groups could work well, and if you're comfortable on camera, Reels or TikTok might be your place.

  3. Post about a question the people you want to reach are already thinking about, such as what someone should understand before starting a part-time business. Ask your leader which kinds of posts get replies in your team.

  4. When someone responds, be curious about them first. Find out what's happening in their life and what they're looking for. If there's a fit, ask whether they would like to see a short introduction, and share the resource your team has prepared.

  5. Keep a simple record of each interested person, with what you talked about and the next step you agreed on. People rarely decide on the spot. They may want to watch the presentation or talk it over with their spouse first.

  6. Stay with the same approach for seven days, then sit down with your sponsor and review your posts and conversations together. You'll learn more from using one approach properly than from collecting another ten strategies.

How do you get network marketing leads online for free?

You get free leads by posting things that make people curious on your one platform, so the right people come to you and ask, "What do you do?" The moment a post reads like an advertisement, people's mental filter switches on and they keep scrolling.

Think about how someone notices you over time. At first, they scroll past without seeing you. Then one day they pause and read a post. Later, they click on your profile and start asking questions. A "join me" post skips all of that, because it asks for a decision from someone who hasn't noticed you yet.

So share what you're actually learning, including the hard days. People connect with honesty much more than with a polished image.

Stuck for ideas? This is where AI is a great help. Ask an AI tool for curiosity-based post ideas that don't mention your company or what you offer, then rewrite the ones you like in your own words. AI gives you the spark. You bring the personality.

How do you recruit without relying on friends and family?

You recruit beyond friends and family by attracting people online who may be interested in your products or opportunity, then having honest, helpful conversations with the ones who respond. The internet opens up the stranger market. There are millions of people online you have never met, and some of them will be interested in what you offer.

How you show up in those conversations matters a lot. When I first started, I thought my energy and enthusiasm would win people over, so I "sold". It pushed people away.

What I learned is that people respond to certainty. And certainty shows up when you stop acting like a salesperson and start trying to solve the person's problem. Before you mention your business, ask yourself, "Am I trying to make a sale, or am I trying to solve a problem?"

When someone says "not now", stay in touch. People need time to think things over. Keep sharing something useful, and when they're ready, they'll remember you as the consistent one who stayed in touch.

What is the best way to recruit network marketing prospects online?

The best way is to pair genuine one-to-one conversations with a simple routine you repeat every week. I saw why this matters when my team started growing. Some members were working harder than ever, yet their results stayed the same.

Hard work without a system doesn't add up.

Your system can be very simple. Set a weekly number for new conversations and follow-ups, and use the same message templates and presentation flow each time. Then choose one day a week to look at what worked. Once you know your numbers, you can see which step needs fixing.

As you get comfortable, follow-up funnels come in. A simple page that captures someone's contact details, connected to a series of follow-up emails, keeps you in touch with interested people even on your busy days. In internet marketing, I was already using funnels to sell courses and books, so when I started my network marketing business, I asked myself, "Why don't I use a funnel to build it, too?" As a beginner, though, start with the process your team already has, and add automation once the basics feel natural.

AI helps here too. Think of it as a virtual assistant that can rewrite a follow-up message so it sounds warm and pressure-free, or map out a realistic week of posting and follow-ups. Keep the relationship in your own hands, though. Network marketing runs on trust between people.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I do MLM online without contacting my friends and family?

Yes. Your name list is a fine place to start, and the internet lets you go far beyond it. With helpful posts on one platform and honest conversations, you can meet people who are interested in what you offer, whether they live in your city or in another country.

Which social media platform should I start with?

Start with the one you already use and where the people you want to reach spend their time. I built mainly on Facebook, and the same ideas carry over to other platforms. Give your choice at least 90 days before you add another.

Do I need technical skills to recruit online?

No. Begin with the resources and presentation your team already has. You can learn tools like funnels and email follow-up one step at a time, the same way you learned the basics of your business.

Should a beginner write a book or build a funnel first?

Not yet. Those can be useful recruiting assets, and they're often best built by a leader for the whole team to share. As a beginner, your priority is to learn your team's process and have real conversations.

How long before I see results online?

I can't give you a fixed timeline, and I won't pretend there is one. It depends on how consistently you follow your process. Practise one approach, review it with your sponsor every week, and improve the step where people drop off.

Please don't try every strategy at once. Choose ONE action that fits where you are today. If your team's recruiting process isn't written down yet, start there. If it is, pick your platform and share your first curiosity post.
